Post offices to be transformed into ICT centers

Post offices were one of the few ways to send messages and items across towns, cities, countries...

Post offices were one of the few ways to send messages and items across towns, cities, countries and continents. Its slow nature earned it's name the "snail mail" which refers to the lag-time between dispatch of a letter and its receipt.

Now, electronic modes of sending and receiving messages have rendered it out-of-date. So what happens to the many post offices across districts and towns in Ghana?

Ghana Post has reached an agreement with

to convert over 360 dormant post offices nationwide into information technology centers.
The purpose is to revamp the dying post offices to come to terms with the new times of information and communication technologies across the length and breadth of the country.

It is expected that the remaking of post offices will improve access to ICT across the country.
The C.E.O of GIFEC, Kofi Attoh is reported on
as saying: "These Post Offices that would turn into ICT centers would belong to Ghana Post so that when they want to do their money transfer and other things again, they already have the facilities".

Lovers of art can now explore the mystic ancient African art and sculptures at the comfort of their desk thanks to Google's amazing virtual museum.

Launched last year, the Google Art Project initially brought 1,000 images from nine countries online, allowing art fans to explore the high resolution images at the click of the button.

The Art Project has rapidly expanded to include 30,000 artworks from 46 museums across the world, including the Tate Gallery in London, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City and Uffizi museum in Florence.

Works of art available online include world renowned artiste Vincent van Gogh, Hans Holbein the Younger and Vittore Carpaccio.

Now African art will be included in the virtual museum, allowing users to take virtual surreal tours of partner museums and get details of the artworks on display. The walk-through feature on the art project uses Google's Street view technology.

"We are particularly excited to have collaborated with the Rock Art Research Institute in Johannesburg and with the South African National Gallery in Cape Town," announced Google Africa in a blog post.

Google has upgraded the art site (www.googleartproject.com) to include G+ integration, hangouts, personalized art galleries and more educational features.

"The Art Project is no longer just about students in Africa and Asia wanting to visit, for example, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It is now also about the American students wanting to explore African artistic heritage," said Google.

That Kenya is one of the global technology innovation hubs is without a doubt. The country has over the last 10 years been buzzing with developers earning Kenya a place among the world's best in ICT applications.
Development of mobile phone applications has particularly been unrivaled. Safaricom's money transfer service, M-PESA has been a revolutionary tool that has now evolved to become an alternative mode of payment that offers convenience to customers and businesses alike.
With this realisation, start up companies such as merchant service provider
, have seen an opportunity to exploit.
Kopo Kopo Vice President of Product Development Dennis Ondeng says they strive to help small businesses integrate mobile money in their operations.
"Statistics show that more than 20 percent of Kenya's GDP (Gross Domestic Product) is moving through M-PESA but there is a huge gap in what Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) adopting this huge driver of the economy," Ondeng explained of their decision to push for the adoption of mobile money payments in such firms.
Kopo Kopo opened its Kenyan doors in April 2011 and has made great headway in helping SMEs to leverage mobile money service as demonstrated by the growth of their developers from the initial four to 12.
